Age Assurance
There are various ways in which an individual’s Age can be checked with Luciditi. The approach depends on the level of confidence demanded by the use-case.
In cases where supplying personal information for a search would be excessive and no existing Digital Identity exists, Age Estimation is a great way to achieve a high level of accuracy allowing adults to bypass the need to prove their age.
Where estimation is not appropriate, ages over 18 years can be confirmed with KYC searches (data records such as electoral roll and financial footprint). This is fast, unobtrusive and can happen in the background without affecting the user – e.g. at the point of checkout on a website. Whilst this proves the data supplied belongs to a real identity, it doesn’t prove that the person you are interacting with is the owner of that data. For this reason, reliance on data checks alone is no longer considered good enough and should be combined with other techniques.
Where specific age (or a user falls under a desired age estimation threshold), Age Verification is ideal. It uses ID document checks, biometric facial matching, KYC checks or proof from an existing Luciditi Digital Identity.

Age estimation uses facial analysis to confirm that an individual is over a certain age in order to protect them from inappropriate content and services. As the name suggests, it is an estimate of age rather than proof. So why is this useful if it doesn’t provide proof of age?

The machine learning models powering Luciditi’s AI are very good at differentiating between children and adults. Combined with technology that detects image modification and spoofing (aka presentation attacks), the accuracy is high enough to be used on a wide scale.
How does it differ from Age Verification
Age estimation can be used to quickly estimate an individual’s age without revealing their identity.
Conversely, Age verification provides a guarantee of age using an existing Digital Identity or by providing a document, usually a passport or other government-issued ID, in order to support an age claim.
Age Verification is appropriate when you need to know that an individual is who they say they are. For other situations where you simply need to protect underage individuals from inappropriate content or services, a much lighter touch can be taken.
Age Estimation reduces the burden on individuals to provide nothing more than a selfie and moves them through your age compliance process quickly.
How does Age Estimation work
The user simply takes a selfie using their web cam or mobile device and the Luciditi Age Estimation feature – embedded within your app or website – takes care of the rest. The whole process normally takes just a few seconds.
Using a restricted, ethical and continually trained machine learning model, Luciditi checks for a good quality selfie image, liveness of individual image, detects manipulated images, latex masks and spoofing attempts. Once image composition checks are complete, it estimates an individual’s age based on your supplied parameters – e.g. is this user over 18?
Users on a desktop without a web cam (or a low-quality one) can seamlessly switch to their mobile camera and back to their desktop session in real time with zero fuss.
Step-Up to Age Verification
In the event of a negative response (e.g. individual is estimated to be under age), you may optionally ask for a photo ID document to prove they are over the required age.
Reduced Data, Improved Compliance
Regardless of the response from the Luciditi Age Estimation (or step-up Age Verification) check, you’ll only ever know if an individual is above or below a specified age. No biometric data is transferred, no user personal information or anything that could be used to identify them, just a pass or fail.
This reduces the amount of sensitive data you need to handle to zero. It also ensures the user is less likely to abandon the check, safe in the knowledge that the data your service needs are extremely limited.

Age Verification uses a combination of factors such as data source checks with optional identity document checks to ensure that the individual presenting is of a valid age. Unlike age estimation, this provides proof of age and is the most accurate way to validate age.
How does Age Verification work
Where a low assurance level is required, the name, address data typically entered on a store checkout page can be used to confirm age. These data checks take just a few seconds and are transparent to the user. This kind of age verification is perfect for the sale of age-restricted goods and services on a web store or on initial player onboarding in a gambling app.
If the data check does not produce a match, you may wish to check previous addresses or step-up to Full Age Verification.
Step-Up to Full Age Verification
For regulated industries such as gambling, insurance, financial services (or where the data check did not locate the individual), it is necessary to ensure that the individual presenting is who they say they are using verified evidence. This can be done at the same time as the data check or within 30 days of the data check.
Embedded within your app or website, the self-contained Luciditi Age Verification widget checks email and mobile phone number for the presence of an existing Luciditi Digital ID. If found, a request for age verification (e.g. “Over 18”) is sent to the user’s mobile for 1-tap consent.
If the user doesn’t already have a Luciditi Digital ID, a selfie and government ID (usually passport or driving license) are captured and verified.
Using a restricted, ethical and continually trained machine learning model, Luciditi checks for a good quality selfie image, the liveness of the individual in the image, detects manipulated images, latex masks and spoofing attempts. Following these checks, the selfie is compared with the photo ID. The ID document is checked for physical security features against a database of 23,000+ document templates and its data compared against the supplied individual's data.
The result of the age check is returned as true or false.
